Myofascial Release Therapy

Myofascial Release

What Is Myofacial Release?

Myofascial Release is a safe and effective hands-on technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure into the Myofascial connective tissue restrictions.

Myofascial release is an extremely effective treatment for those suffering from chronic or severe pain and recurring injuries.

Practically any area of the body that contains soft tissue can be treated using myofascial therapy, including:

  • Hips
  • Shoulders
  • Upper and lower back
  • Neck
  • and others

Understanding Myofascia

Myofascia, or “Fascia” for short, is a specialized system of the body that has an appearance similar to a spider’s web or a sweater.

Fascia is very densely woven covering and interpenetrating every muscle, bone, tendon, ligament, as well as all our internal organs including the heart, lungs, brain, and spinal cord.

The most interesting aspect of the fascial system is that it is not just a system of separate coverings. It is one continuous structure that exists from head to toe without interruption.

Each part of the body is connected to every other part by the fascia, like the yarn in a sweater.

Restricted Fascial Tissue

The consistency of myofascial tissue resembles a fish net which is used to both contain and protect muscle tissue.

When myofascial tissue becomes restricted through disease, injury, some other type of trauma (surgery), or improper movement, it loses its flexibility and becomes dense and tight which produces tension and pain.

The effects can be felt at the sight of the problem, or radiate to other locations within the body.

Those suffering from myofascial restrictions can experience such problems as:

  • Headaches
  • Reduced flexibility
  • Numbness
  • Chronic muscle pain and spasms
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Recurring sports injuries
  • Sciatica
  • Poor posture
  • and others

How Myofascial Release Therapy Helps

Myofascial Release Therapy addresses densely locked tissues that can modify how your body functions and stabilizes. Releasing these adhesions will restore a balance to that body part and can have effects throughout the entire body.

Licensed massage therapists are trained to identify problem areas and then effectively treat them through trigger point therapy.

Myofascial release therapy has a number of benefits. These include:

  • Relieving muscle tension and pain
  • Reduced muscle spasms
  • Improved joint movement
  • Ease of breathing
  • Reduction or elimination of recurring injuries
  • and more
