If you are dealing with muscle tension or pain in your shoulders, Hands On Healing in Montgomery, Alabama offers Bodywork & Manual Therapy treatments designed to identify the underlying causes and alleviate the discomfort.
One of the things we hear most from people is that they feel that ache in the tops of their shoulders up into their neck.
People’s usual tagline to go along with this is, “I keep my stress in my shoulders”. Sounds good enough but this is usually not the case.
Take a moment and picture in your mind someone whose shoulders ‘feel like they are around their ears’. Can you see how their head is being pulled down into their body and their shoulders are way up in the air?
Not very attractive, nor do you see most people walking around this way. Yet almost everyone says this is what they feel.
The problem most people feel is played out in Figure 1.
If you follow the arrows in Figure 1 (click image to expend), you can see that the oblique muscle group, serratus anterior, and one muscle not shown because it is under the shoulder blade (subscapularis), are all pulling on the shoulder blade in a forward and downward direction.
These are the muscles that enable us to extend our arms out in front of us and keep them there as we use our shoulders. We use them everyday for most of our daily activities, so if you think about it we use this group of muscles A LOT!
As you use muscles repeatedly the fascial components of the muscles begin to shorten and lock the muscles in a shortened state.
What most people FEEL is the little group of muscles in the back called the rhomboids and upper trapezius muscles (not shown).
When the muscles in the front of the body begin to shorten and become too tight and too strong, these smaller groups of muscles are still going to try and do there job and pull the shoulder blade back into the position it should be in.
They usually don’t win; and because of the fact that they lose, they spasm and cramp, get trigger points, and ache on a regular basis.
They will constantly tell your brain they are firing so it feels like they are being dragged up to your shoulders but they are actually being over stretched.
How can Hands On Healing help?
When we work on you, we will not just work on the shoulders that are bothering you. We will try to do things to release the forward muscle groups and get the shoulder blades back into position.
There is even a super simple exercise we can show you that will make worlds of difference in how this feels.
One last thing, under stress most people shorten their breathing or stop breathing all together. This tightening of the diaphragm adds to the feeling in the shoulders tremendously!
Need proof? The last time you saw someone freaking out due to a stressful situation did you tell them to take their shoulders down or take a deep breath?
